New standards for CompactFlash

cfaCompared to SD (Secure Digital), CompactFlash is significantly defeated. They have no longer  used in compact cameras and is now limited to DSLR cameras. But that does not mean CompactFlash is no longer developed.

CompactFlash Association (CFA) recently announced a new specification for CompactFlash. CF 5.0 specification that paved the way to 48-bit addressing (up from 28-bit). Also the data transfer rate also increased from 128KB / s to 32MB / s.

One again, the theoretical maximum capacity increase from 137GB to 144 petabytes. There was “Video Performance Guarantee” for the professional video camera (optional), a new Interface Electrical Specification that is collaborating with existing ATA standard, and the promise of the card design to become easier and better.

Capacity and higher performance than CF card allowed by 48-bit addressing of the CF5.0 specification that will enhance the value of the DSLR camera further. Video Performance Guarantee Feature from CF5.0 specification will help CF card expansion into new markets, such as high-speed movie devices like professional video camcorders.”, said CFA chairman Shigeto Kanda from Canon.

To help manufacturers and consumers to distinguish the new CF5 cards, CompactFlash Association has made a symbol CF5 compatibility. Beside that, because the Video Performance Guarantee is an optional feature, a symbol of compatibility also created that can be used to the card manufacturer so the consumers will be able to choose the right card type.
