Broadband Comparison – What to Look for When Comparing Broadband Internet

home broadband

Did you know that 99% of the population in the United Kingdom already has access to a high-speed broadband network? This is the reason why UK is considered to be one of the best European markets for broadband Internet.

Now, whether you are a new broadband Internet subscriber or you are planning to switch from one provider to another, there are certain factors that you need to take into consideration.

Before delving deeper into the things that you should look for in a broadband Internet service provider, there are a few reasons why subscribers benefit from the stiff competition in the industry.

As more and more broadband service providers are entering the market to get their share of subscribers, the more that their direct competitors lower their rates or offer better deals. As a result, when you make a comparison of the features, quality and costs of the broadband services offered by each provider – you will find out that you may actually get more value for your money.

So the key to getting the best broadband Internet service provider in the market is to make a comparison of the rates and features that they offer.

Broadband Comparison 101: How to Look for the Best Home Broadband Services Provider

To help you out, here are the key features that you need to compare when looking for the best deal when it comes to the home broadband services offered by different providers:

1. The cost of the home broadband service.

Not all broadband services providers are created equal.  When you are offered a lower rate during the first month of your subscription, this is definitely a good thing because the savings that you will get will roughly equate to a month or so’s cost of service.

Next, are there any one-off fees that you need to pay?  Some broadband service providers may charge you a one-time fee for the modem, wireless router or even the installation.  However, some companies offer this for free.

All in all – when comparing the costs – consider the savings that you will get, depending on the offer provided by the company.

2.  The speed and the monthly download usage limitations.

For this, you need to measure whether your Internet usage is on the light or the heavy side.

If you like downloading a lot of music or video files, you would need a bigger download limit. You may also want to consider an unlimited usage policy if you are a heavy Internet user.

Additionally, the speed is something that you need to take into consideration. You do not need to pay an arm and a leg for a greater speed if you will end up not using it anyway.

3. The length of the contract.

This is one final cost consideration that you need to make when creating a broadband comparison.  There are home broadband Internet service providers who will tie you in with a 12 or 18 month contract.

However, there may be companies out there who will not require you to such a long-term contract. Do your research to find out which one is most suitable for you.

By taking these broadband comparison factors into consideration – you can rest assured that you are getting the best value for your money when subscribing to home broadband Internet.

Broadband internet brings an end to high street rentals

tiscali broadband

Article by Gary Parsons

We are seeing a growing trend in how users are choosing to watch films and music videos online rather than their televisions. Now research from the technology company Motorola has revealed that 43% of Britons do this, whilst France came out on top with 59% watching some form of television online.

This is bad news for the high street video stores who have already seen the market decline due to the download and illegal sale of DVD’s before films are often released in the cinema. Another factor has been the introduction of DVD rental by post, which requires you to keep an updated list of films online and as one is returned, the other is posted out to you. Blockbuster has always been a big player in this market and has regularly fought back with offers to entice people back inside their stores by offering free rentals to those returning them in person.

Long before the release of this information from Motorola and postal DVD rental services, our internet has been taken over by sites such as Youtube.com where users submit videos and then are watched by others. Now a system called Joost (pronounced “Juiced”), which distributes TV shows and other forms of video across the internet using peer-to-peer technologies, has launched and aims to stream high quality official content from many large corporations.

What does this mean for the average internet user? Well if you’ve not done so already; you’re going to have to invest in a broadband internet connection. Without this you’re to expect slow and jerky videos or simply miss out.

Once you’ve set yourself up with a deal from the many broadband providers available, you’re well on your way to a night in with a bottle of wine in-front of your computer with a loved one. Don’t worry though as this doesn’t mean an expensive night in as you can download films from the likes of Tiscali Movies Now, who offer films from 99p to £3.50.

With so many options available and at a low price, it’s no wonder were turning to the internet to satisfy our TV needs.

Deals for all with broadband internet

home broadband
by m3cfa

If you’re in need of a great home broadband deals, then you should search online for a deal amongst the wide range of offers available online.

Broadband internet is available country wide and can be obtained in a number of ways. The most important of these are the wired and wireless options. With wireless options, you are able to roam freely across the country and use broadband speed internet connections wherever you would normally be able to use a 3G wireless phone signal.

With the wired broadband option, you don’t have the freedom to roam, but prices will be cheaper for a similar speed connection. In addition, you can achieve much higher speeds than with a wireless connection.

Additionally, with a Home Broadband Deals, you can be sure of a solid connection that won’t drop out randomly as a wireless connection might. Also, the wired connection is always on and doesn’t need to be activated each time you wish to use it.

Shared connection on your desktop and laptop

The best aspect of wired internet is the fact that it can be shared among computers in your home, via a wireless router. So you can effectively experience a wireless internet connection within your home, on your laptop, as well as a wired connection on your main PC, meaning that your connection is shared among all the PCs in your home.

Speeds of wired connections can now reach up to 50mbps, meaning that a whole music album can be downloaded in an instant. You’ll never experience waiting for streamed videos or services and whole films can be downloaded in a few short minutes. Super fast broadband internet will open the world up to you in a way that you’ve never experienced before.

Experience the amazing new rush

The feeling of using broadband internet at super fast speeds will be akin to the first time you experienced the internet on a dial up connection, the wonder that you will feel will be phenomenal. It may also be similar to the step from dial up to broadband, where pages appeared in a flash, where once they took a few minutes to load.

A fixed connection is ideal for those that need fast connections in their home and don’t have a great need to surf on the move. A wireless connection is more suited to those who use net books or tablet PCs in public areas or need to be able to use the internet on the move perhaps as part of their job.

There are many options and the only way that you’ll truly know how to get the best one for you is to search online for the best deal, checking all of the possible options before you commit to choosing and therefore signing up to and buying any single one.

The Benefits Of Mobile Internet

By: Harvey McEwan
Posted: Feb 18, 2010

2008 was the first time in modern technological history that the number of desktop computer web users was overtaken by the number of people accessing the internet via mobile phones and laptops. The growing trend to access the World Wide Web via a wireless network is undeniably popular but what exactly is the lure of internet on the go?

To begin with, internet access on the move has proved extremely popular with fans of social networking. The ability to upload photos from your mobile phone directly to sites like Facebook or Myspace means people can create an almost live stream of uploads as events happen. Being able to contact friends on the move is another draw of mobile internet access. Can’t get hold of your friends or trying to rearrange a social event at short notice? Mobile internet means you’re only ever a click away from big groups of friends, regardless of where you are.

Internet on the go has also proved especially useful for holiday makers and commuters travelling by air and public transport. In the event of a delay or cancellation, a wifi connection or USB dongle allows travellers to hop online and get the latest updates or find an alternative mode of transport. For individuals going to meet or pick up friends of family at the airport, train or bus station, access to mobile internet allows them to check on their progress through live departure and arrival sites beamed directly to laptops and smartphones.

When out and about shopping, access to mobile internet could be your secret weapon to getting a great deal. Being able to check prices on everything from cars and clothes, life insurance or credit card deals between different providers is a popular benefit of mobile internet. Getting insurance quotes via wifi also allows you to keep portable versions of your offers which can be opened and completed at any time.

Finally, millions of people worldwide enjoy the ease with which they access their bank accounts online, allowing them to transfer funds, pay bills and make enquiries on the go. Mobile banking is particularly useful for business owners who might spend a lot of time out of the office but require constant access to their finances.

The benefits of mobile internet it would seem are wide ranging, covering social, financial and personal needs. A secure internet connection is always recommended when using a Wifi enabled laptop or mobile browsing but consumers can get plenty of advice on this from their internet provider or mobile phone network, thus allowing them to enjoy and utilise the benefits of mobile internet to the full.

How to Make Internet Phone Calls Using Your Home Broadband and Phone Line

For over 100 years, making a telephone call has relied on basically the same principle. Using antiquated technology, telephone calls from landlines have often meant poor quality voice clarity, crackly lines and high costs, particularly if you call international numbers on a regular basis.

But thanks to the Internet, all of that has changed. The broadband telephony revolution really started 15 years ago, with the development of software that allowed PC users to make calls via the Internet. Two predominant types emerged, VoIP and Skype. Although both technically use the same software application principles, the two systems have jostled for position ever since, with VoIP coming out as the current winner.

What is Skype?

Skype is a software application that lets users make voice calls via the Internet and their broadband connection. It was originally developed under the banner of The Skype Group and let users make free calls within the Skype service, while calls to traditional landline telephones and mobiles could be made for a small fee using a debit-based user account system. The package became popular because it offered additional features such as instant messaging, video conferencing and file transfer.

Skype uses Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, but unlike other VoIP packages uses its own particular protocol to allow users to connect to other Skype accounts. Initially popular, Skype seems to have reached a plateau in growth as other providers have developed their own VoIP protocols and comprehensive call plans to suit their customers needs.

Whats the alternative to Skype? A monthly VoIP call plan

The real alternative to Skype is to opt for a VoIP call plan. Call plans give you the option of creating a flexible user package, specifying particular countries that you would like to include in the package. This is particularly useful if you make repeated calls to one destination such as India or the United States, or if you make calls to several international locations but still want the convenience of using your existing handset. The issues with voice clarity and the worry of being disconnected in the middle of a call have been negated by the introduction of faster broadband speeds and better quality lines incorporating fibre optics. So in fact the quality of Internet phone calls is now probably better than using a traditional phone line.

VoIP uses a similar software protocol to Skype, but one of the key features of sending a message in small data packages through a broadband line is that not only is it faster, (hence the improved quality), but it is also more secure. One of the issues raised about Skype was the security of the data, with many people worrying that the Skype system left a backdoor open for anyone with access to listen in on conversations. Modern VoIP technology makes this practically impossible, ensuring that conversations are kept private.

Making Internet calls is now as simple as picking up your handset and dialling your chosen number. A small adapter can be fitted to most modern handsets, meaning that you do not have to replace your existing handset with a VoIP specialist unit. This has helped to bring the cost of VoIP down even further, making it an attractive package not only for business users, but for domestic customers too. With call plans that can be designed to suit the individual user, VoIP and making Internet phone calls is leaving the traditional landline system behind. VoIP and Internet calls are the future of telephony.
